“Your dad always talked about this place,” Reed said. They both stood outside the house, next to the horse stalls, while Violet ate pie with everyone inside. “You should have seen how thrilled he was when he bought it.”

Cal vaguely remembered. He’d been a pre-teen, and not eager to leave his life in the suburbs of Lyndale to go shovel chicken manure at dawn every day. “Was he…”

He didn’t know how to ask without exposing what he knew, but Reed was sharp. He shrugged. “Look, kid. He worked undercover. He didn’t want to; he was good at it, and they pushed him. There’s no way to do that work completely clean. Probably tore your family up. As far as I’m concerned, he was a good cop. Saved a lot of people, including that girl in there, and he lost his life for it. For the love of everything holy, please don’t tell me what he was up to out here.” Reed spat on the ground. “It’s a nice place.”

“I hate it.”

“He noticed that.” Reed grinned. “Talked about you a lot. Said you were the most like him. He could never pull anything with you. Five years old, and you’d be calling his bluff.”

Cal’s chest tightened. “Do you know why he took me there?”

It was something he’d wondered for years, in his bed, late at night. Whenever he was alone, he’d wonder why an undercover agent thought bringing his son around the criminals who’d eventually murder him would be a good idea. Had he not cared if he was safe? He’d never brought Leo or Nick.

“No.” Reed looped his hands around his head and stretched. “Maybe they suspected him less if he had a kid around. It wasn’t something a cop would do. It’s nothing I would do. It wasn’t right, or fair to you. Maybe he just trusted you. He never told me, and I only saw you the once.”

Maybe he trusted you.

And the one time he hadn’t gone...

“We’ll get this SOB,” Reed promised. “Gray’s obsessed with that girl. There’s no way he’s not taking a shot at her once he figures out where she’s staying. Speaking of, that’s enough time here. I don’t want the kids getting tangled up in all this mess.”

Violet was already on her way out, a plate full of apple pie for Reed and himself. “Soren’s a decent baker, you know?”

“I’m just glad he’s good at something besides being a pain in my...Hello.” Carly ran out the door and clung to Violet’s knee.

“We miss you.” The little girl squished her face against Violet’s leg. “Stay. We’ll keep Taco away from you. Leah can hold him now.”

Violet knelt and dropped a kiss on the girl’s forehead. “I miss you guys, too. Thanks for the pie.” She didn’t promise to see the girl soon, or that everything would be okay. She just walked back to the door with her. “So many people care about you guys, and they’re going to take good care of you.”

He didn’t say a word as she wiped tears away before climbing inside his car.
